What To Expect

The Ganden Sumtseling Monastery is known to many in a number of different ways. Also called the Songzanlin Monastery, the old temple is the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan Province. Built in a traditional style close to that of the Potala Palace in Lhasa, this "Little Potala Palace" is situated at the foot of the Foping Hill. Climb 146 steps from the entrance and you'll find yourself in the magnificent main hall, decorated with murals that depict Buddhist tales and legends. Not only is the temple beautifully built, but also houses a collection of treasures from statues of Buddha to golden lamps, liturgical Tibetan readings and more. Learn more about the Tibetan and Han nationalities as you make your way throughout the three grand structures of the monastery and feel at peace amid the relaxing and religious atmosphere of the temples.
