FAQs

Do I need a visa?

If you hold a Singapore passport, no. You can enter and stay in Mongolia for 30 days without a visa, which is more than sufficient for the trip! If you hold another country's passport, you can check whether you need a visa here. If you need a visa, let the operator (Beyond Expeditions SG) know so they can help you with the information required to fill it out. Please note that the operator does not cover visa application fees.

Who else will be going on the trip?

Each expedition group is capped at 6 participants maximum, in addition to your local expedition guide and driver. You can sign up with your friends or meet like-minded travelers solo! The operator will organize a get-together session for the group a few weeks before the trip, so don't worry. Many lifelong friendships have been formed on expeditions.

Do I need to be fit?

No. There is little trekking or hiking, not even in the wilderness. Just note that:

  • You should be prepared to ride a horse for around 5-7 hours
  • For the 2 nights with the Tsaatan reindeer herders, you'll be sleeping in the teepees in a thick sleeping bag on soft ground
  • Offroad drives in the countryside can get bumpy because the roads are unpaved, though the vehicle itself is comfortable to ride in

What will the participants eat on the trip? Will there be halal, vegetarian, or vegan options?

The local expedition guide, an experienced cook, will prepare different types of cuisine during the trip. Try anything from traditional Mongolian food to western fare! Halal, vegetarian, or vegan options are all available.

What will accommodation be like on the trip?

In the capital city, Ulaanbaatar, you will stay in three-star hotels (twin-sharing rooms paired by gender). In the countryside, you will stay in guesthouses, traditional gers & Tsaatan teepees. There will be proper beds for all nights except the two nights with the Tsaatan reindeer herders, where you will sleep in teepees in the four-season thick sleeping bag on soft ground.

How safe is Mongolia?

Mongolia is one of the safest countries in the world for tourists. Petty theft can occasionally occur in the cities, so just be aware of your surroundings. In the countryside, your expedition guide and driver are locals experienced in navigating, and you will stay with trusted nomad families.

Do I need to bring cash?

The currency in Mongolia is the Tulgrik (MNT). You can withdraw money at ATMs and banks in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar. Credit cards (Visa and Mastercard) are accepted in many shops, sometimes even in the countryside. US dollars are accepted in some places in Ulaanbaatar as well. We recommend a per-person cash amount of USD 100-300 (based on a two-week trip duration), with the option to use credit or debit cards for big-ticket items like cashmere, leather goods, musical instruments, fur, or antiques.

What are the mandatory immunizations for Mongolia?

There are no mandatory immunizations for travelers to Mongolia though you should be up-to-date with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio, and Hepatitis A. We recommend you seek advice from your local GP regarding the correct immunizations and preventative treatments. You are not required to be vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter Mongolia.

Do I need to take any COVID-19 tests before entering Mongolia? Do I need to quarantine upon arrival?

Before departure, no "negative" PCR or rapid test results are required to enter Mongolia. No testing is required upon arrival at the border points. No quarantine is required upon arrival either.

What happens if I get COVID-19 in Mongolia?

If you test positive, you will be isolated in the nearest health center and obtain treatment. Free vaccinations and treatments are available for travelers.
