What To Expect

Get ready for an up close and personal experience with some of the gentlest mammals in the ocean. The Eyjafjordur Bay is teeming with humpback whales, mink whales, dolphins, and many other types of marine life. You’ll take off into the bay on a classic Icelandic oak fishing boat, specially designed to be minimally intrusive for the whales for a sustainable experience. You will sail into the waters at a constant speed while whales and dolphins come to swim and play around the boat. The chances of seeing whales is very high in Eyjafjordur Bay, with a success rate of 90% in the winter and an almost certain chance of seeing them in the summertime. After plying the waters for the whales for a few hours, you’ll also have the chance to try to catch some fish to bring back! There is plenty of cod in the water, but past catches have included haddock, Pollack, catfish, and even giant halibut! You are almost certain to catch something with the specialized fishing gear and the expert guidance of the captain. The boat is manned by a local crew that knows the waters well and will also look after you during the cruise. There will be warm coveralls provided, along with blankets, refreshments, and homemade baked pastries. Come out and don’t miss the best experience in northern Iceland! (Please note that this activity takes place in the village of Hauganes, 30 min north of Akureyri and approx 5-6 hrs drive from Reykjavík. Self driving to this activity is highly recommended due to limited transfer options)

The whales from Hauganes were really beautiful to watch! And we saw some dolphins too which was super cool. The boat ride was not long and the guide/crew were amazing and very knowledgeable about the tour. I really enjoyed it. You might want to bring something for motion sickness if you are prone to it, otherwise trip is completely smooth sailing. Never tried fishing before but it was very easy here. We kept the big fish and tossed the smaller ones back into the water! The food and drinks they give you at the end tasted amazing too! Nothing to dislike about this tour.

Seeing a few humpback whales, chasing whales on the sea is very bloody. The returning sea fishing is also very fruitful. The fishermen are slaughtered on the spot and the fish is distributed to everyone. Go back to the hotel and cook two meals, fresh and delicious.

It is the most successful event in Iceland! Two hours to see two groups, a total of six or seven humpback whales are close at hand, repeatedly surfaced in the water, and then squatted into the water, the captain squats the humpback whale activity. The sea fishing on the way back is close to magic. The fish squats into the water and is a big fish. We caught a few fish, and two of them were almost ten pounds. But the captain did not give us all the fish we caught, and gave it to others. The people on board had a share, no matter if you caught it. In the evening, none of our nine people had finished eating. Because the fish was fresh, it tasted great. The advantage of whale watching in Hauganes is that there are fewer people and you can see whales in the sea for half an hour. It may be less time for whale watching than others, but it is basically enough, and the sea fishing is indeed worthwhile. The boat we bring back is not only a ticket for one person.

Luckily, the weather was nice that day and saw the whale. The little companion of the boat caught a lot of fish. Fresh fish soup is delicious!
