It was an amazing experience meeting the elephants. Glad this place saves them and tries to give them a longer life. It is way better than all these other tours in Phuket that still use them for trekking and circus shows. Please don’t support elephant riding. These animals have had their souls broken. I understand it takes a lot to feed them and care for them, but I still feel bad for them here that they are surrounded by about 50 tourists per visit, twice a day. The feeding and bathing was fun and gross at the same time. You sink into the mud quite deep and the elephants poop in it. Some of the elephants didn’t look like they wanted to participate in the activities and it looked like they are forced into the mud or shower with a tug of the ear or lip. It also looked like one mahout was poking it with something he kept taking in and out of his pocket to make it go in the mud. A photographer takes pics for us so we can enjoy the moment to post on their fb page. I haven’t seen them yet. A couple things I did not like: how the staff makes us take a bunch of group photos and then telling to scream ‘we love elephants!’ ‘Let’s get dirty!’ or some other phrase. And they want us to scream. I don’t think a large group of people should be screaming next to the elephants or that taking group photos is necessary with huge group of strangers. It made me feel really uncomfortable. The worst part was the ride two and from the sanctuary on a back of a covered truck. We were the second couple picked up and we had two more stops to squeeze 8 people in the back. It was super hot and the ride was almost 1 hour long and super bumpy. One girl almost threw up and I had the worst headache the rest of the day.

What To Expect

A truly wholesome, immersive experience with Thailand's famous gentle giants is only possible on an ethical elephant experience with great consideration for the welfare of the animal. This is why a half day trip to the famous Elephant Jungle Sanctuary in Phuket has become so popular: visitors will be able to interact and join the elephants in their natural habitat and learn about the life of these rescued giants. After a briefing on the work and background of the sanctuary as well as some snacks, visitors will be able to don the traditional clothing of the Karen tribe. They will help the sanctuary's keepers to prepare natural dietary supplements for the elephants in their care. Then they will be properly introduced to the sanctuary's rescue elephants, and even feed them the prepared supplements. While playing and interacting with the elephants, taking photos and making sure they are well fed, or even just observing them, visitors will be able to learn about the elephants' past. They'll be taught about elephant behavior patterns and characteristics, and bond better with them when they learn how a truly ethical experience with elephants is achieved. Visitors will also get the chance to have some good clean fun by taking a big mud spa with the elephants, and help them wash off afterwards in the elephant shower room! Then you'll get your own shower and enjoy a delicious Thai meal as a reward for all the hard work, with vegetarian options available. You'll be dropped off back to your hotel a true sense of accomplishment, knowing that you've aided the sanctuary and its elephants, and learnt how to best help these beautiful creatures in the future.

The most magical day! The elephants were very approachable, and each person was able to proceed at their comfort level. Some were content to stand back and watch, others fully involved in feeding and bathing the elephants. Staff very friendly and inclusive of everyone, very informative of safety around the animals, and regarding their efforts to bring the rescued animals back to health. An added benefit...they had a photographer capturing every moment, and provide free access to the photos. I would definitely visit again!!

It was a fabulous time with the elephants. They’re well kept for at the sanctuary and the activities that we did with them were easy but very fun. My favorite part was the mud bath and pool time. I think everyone on the group really loved it.

Highlight of our trip. Loved every moment there!! Truly an amazing experience. So glad we add this to out trip. Got picked up on time. Staff was very nice. Food was good. There is bathroom & shower to rinse off. Feeding elephants was cool...more fun to bathe them. The elephants seem happy too. Highly recommended.
