Sera Monastery, fully known as Sera Mahayana Monastery, is located at the foot of Sera Wuzi Mountain in the northern suburbs of Lhasa. It was built by Jamchen Chojey, a disciple of Master Tsongkhapa, during the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty. Sera Monastery is grand in scale, with numerous temple buildings constructed along the mountain. Its towering golden roofs shimmer in the sunlight. It is one of the three great monasteries of Lhasa and one of the six major monasteries of the Gelug school (Yellow Hat sect).
