What to expect
The blue and white aesthetic of Dali is hidden in the warp and weft of ancient tie-dyeing. Step into a tie-dye workshop and embark on an immersive intangible cultural heritage experience, creating a tie-dye work with the essence of Cangshan Mountain and Erhai Lake with your own hands. In the workshop, tie-dyed fabrics drying in the sun flutter in the wind, and the blue and white patterns, like the sky and clouds, fully display the simple and natural beauty. Under the guidance of a teacher, first select a piece of pure white cotton cloth (you can choose styles such as square scarves, T-shirts, or scarves), and then unleash your creativity by bundling it with rubber bands, strings, and other tools. You can fold the fabric to create neat pleats; you can also fix it with clips to form unique geometric patterns; or you can casually wrap it to create a free and natural texture—different bundling methods will produce distinctly different dyeing effects. Immerse the bundled fabric into a dyeing vat filled with indigo dye. Watch as the fabric gradually turns a deep blue. After patiently waiting for a period, take it out, unwrap the strings and rubber bands, and a unique tie-dye work will make a stunning appearance. The interwoven blue and white patterns are naturally formed, with no two pieces being exactly alike. Every smudge is a gift of time and nature. During the process, you will learn about the long history and craftsmanship of ancient tie-dyeing, and experience the ingenuity and wisdom of the ancients. After completion, take this handmade tie-dye work home with you, bringing the crispness of Cangshan, the clarity of Erhai, and the intangible cultural heritage charm of Dali.
