The Hanoi Train - Ha Noi's 5 Gates Heritage Train

The Ha Noi's 5 Gate Heritage Train ride is a unique and charming experience that takes you back in time. There will be a layover at Tu Son to explore the Do temple (Temple of the Ly kings) with free shuttle bus to n fro. What makes it special is the blend of vintage aesthetics with modern comfort. It’s perfect for photos and a memorable way to explore the city beyond the usual tourist spots. Highly recommended.

The tourist train was beautiful, and the staff were very attentive. Each car had a different design, but we couldn't walk between cars. On the outbound journey, special Vietnamese pastries were already waiting on the table, and on the return trip, there was another type of Vietnamese snack and iced tea! There was also a traditional Vietnamese music performance along the way. On the return journey, the train stopped at Long Bien Station for 20 minutes. It's usually impossible to take photos on the railway tracks, let alone at the head of the century-old Long Bien Bridge, which was an incredibly rare and exciting opportunity for us!

One for the books experience. While the rest of the tourist are waiting for the train, we decided to go on the train itself. An awesome opportunity to run the train tracks, see another town Tu son and wave at the tourists waitng at the train street. Upon arriving at the train, we were greeted by people lining the path. We sat on the first floor of the train, which allowed us to wave to passersby outside the window as we went through Train Street. After getting off the train, we took a shuttle bus to the temple. We had to stay there for an hour, and it was very crowded. On the other side, there were many vendors selling snacks and drinks. The return trip was a bit chaotic as we had to get back on the shuttle bus to the train. Finally, we were delayed for 20 minutes at Long Bien Bridge on the way back. Overall, it was an okay experience, and there were people performing songs during the round trip.

The experience is all about the train and worth trying once as it is beautiful.I booked the upper deck & arrived early, which helped me take nice photos before it got busier & it never felt too crowded. They provide water and a local snack, and you can buy extra drinks and snacks on board, though nothing special. The train moves slowly and the journey takes about an hour, but it was a bit disappointing as there isn’t much scenery, mostly jungles and bushes. After the ride, we took a 10-minute shuttle to a small temple where we spent about 90 minutes, even though it can be explored in 10 minutes, so the rest of the time felt long and uneventful. It was also very hot and there weren’t many food options, so it’s best to eat beforehand. On the way back, the train stops for photos at an open carriage, and you can briefly walk on the tracks. Before arriving, it passes a “train street” where crowds gather to watch. The staff were polite and respectful, but overall it’s mainly about the train.

This was a rare and exceptional experience. Taking the 5 gates train at the end of Tet was amazing. The setting, the customer service team, every element was exceptional. Anouncements in English was an unexpected kindness, it is an authentic Vietnamese experience rather than touristy - which suited us perfectly. for extra impact pair with a Klook food tour that ends on train street and if you took the morning 5 gates train you can get to see the afternoon train’s return if you time it right. One train, two experiences.

The sightseeing bus has only been operating for a year, and it's already a hit. The entire activity lasts 3.5 hours, featuring a retro-designed carriage with drinks and snacks provided at the tables. There are singing performances on both the outbound and return journeys, and souvenirs are available for purchase. In the middle of the trip, there's a shuttle bus to a temple, and on the way back, there's a 20-minute stop for photos. The whole experience flies by and is very enjoyable.

I discovered this tour while looking for a half-day activity during my trip to Hanoi. Since the destination was a temple in Bac Ninh province that I had always wanted to visit, I confirmed my booking. We chose the first floor because we wanted to interact with the people at the Train Cafe. As the train passed, we had a great time with the people along the tracks on both sides. The train was clean and included snacks for the round trip. After disembarking, we immediately boarded a tour bus to the ancient temple. Although I didn't understand the commentary in Vietnamese, I received incense for worship and imitated the customs during prayer. One thing to note is that when I first arrived at Hanoi Station, I couldn't find the gate at all (it was on the second floor at the time). The ticket only had a seat number, so I had to ask staff to find my carriage, which is why I recommend arriving early. I happened to wear an Ao Dai on the train, and many Vietnamese people were also wearing Ao Dai, making it very colorful. Most of the groups were large, and it was surprisingly lively. Including that aspect, it was a valuable cultural experience.

We booked 2 seats, but you cannot choose the exact seats, only the 1st or 2nd floor. We were placed on a tiny bench that could comfortably fit 2 people, but they squeeze 3 people onto it! The grandma wasn’t happy being separated from her friends, and we were uncomfortable being squeezed in. She eventually chose to sit elsewhere. Not great to see business prioritised over passengers’ comfort. It is also extremely noisy: loudspeakers, musicians and people in general. Bring headphones if you’re sensitive to noise! Apart from that, it was very well organised. Clean toilets, beautiful decoration and small snacks provided. After about 1 h, we stopped and a free bus took us to a temple before returning to the train. A second stop on the way back allowed us to see the bridge. The landscapes aren’t spectacular, but we saw a few rice fields. On the way back, seeing people along Train Street was fun! Despite the bitter start, we really enjoyed the experience overall.
