What to expect
Located in Cova da Iria, Fátima, this sanctuary marks the site where the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. It includes the Chapel of the Apparitions, Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, and Basilica of the Holy Trinity. The Rosary Basilica houses the tombs of Francisco, Jacinta, and Lúcia, featuring neoclassical architecture and a 65-meter bell tower. The Holy Trinity Basilica, inaugurated in 2007, has stunning frescoes and stained-glass windows. Pilgrims light candles at the Apparitions Chapel as an act of prayer. The Via Sacra follows the path of the shepherds, ending at Valinhos Chapel, site of the fourth apparition.
