What to expect

In the remote areas of the central Icelandic Highlands, the Askja Caldera stands as one of the most imposing land formations in the country. The Caldera is not just one of the biggest in the country, but it also caused many a historic eruption that induced the changes in the surrounding area's terrain. Your tour to this incredible volcano begins with a departure from Akureyri, heading up to Lake Myvatn and driving eastward into scenic natural sights. Listen to your guide tell you more about the surrounding region, its climate and terrains, and more as you pass Herðubreiðarlindir Springs. Once you've made it to the Caldera itself, you'll arrive at Dreki Gully for a quick (pre-packed) lunch break. Explore and take photos before you head up the caldera itself, hiking to Askja Lake, which is formed within the mountain itself. The landscape is dramatic and rugged from the volcanic activity, and your guide will be able to give you fascinating insights into the eruptions and historic moments of Askja. You will stop again at Dreki Gully on your way down so you can rest before you enjoy the sightseeing return trip over Lake Myvatn's unique scenery. Grab some refreshments (at own expense) at a local restaurant before finally arriving back at Akureyri.
