A day trek through the splendid beauty of Fox Glacier and through the wilds of Chancellor Dome is an unforgettable experience in the West Coast. Perfect for both beginner and experienced hikers, the trek begins at a height of 1,270m at Chancellor Shelf, at the Chancellor Hut, where you can explore the beautiful alpine surroundings. Flowering alpine plants and various alpine wildlife can be seen here through different times of the year. You might glimpse the Chamois, or mountain antelope. From the hut, your route takes you to the basins full of snowgrass, and opening up into a breathtaking view of powerful Mt. Tasman, one of the highest peaks of the Southern Alps. Through the gullies, you ascend to Chancellor Dome itself and to a vantage point that gives the most beautiful view peaks. All around you, in glorious panorama, is the splendid alpine landscape, offering views that go all the way to the Tasman Sea, with waves crashing to shore at Gillespies Beach. Enjoy your lunch and head back down to the hut, and you'll be flown back safely via helicopter to the Fox Glacier township, full of wonderful memories.
